Afternoon learning and why high school should start later

When I was in high school, I struggled in the morning. I often would be failing my first few classes and passing the rest because at that point, I was more awake. I struggled to go to sleep early and get up early and I know I was not alone with this. I think teens in high school shouldn’t be starting school until 11AM at the earliest. This gives them time to get enough rest, eat breakfast, and prepare for their day without rushing. 7AM is too early. I had to get up at 6AM myself because I walked to school and needed at least 40 minutes to get ready and eat before I left.

Think about the standard working hours for many jobs out there. Most adults are starting work at 8 in the morning. The reason school hours are set the way they are is for parents to be able to work and tend to their kid's before leaving for work. This also prepares students for the real world outside of school where they will likely need to get up between 6 and 7AM for work.

If work schedules of most parents lined up, I am sure they would change it but they need to be able to go according to a parent's work schedule like mentioned and most parents are going to work around 8AM.

I think it would be fantastic for kids to start later. Allow for them to have time in the morning to wake up, eat, do their homework and relax before going into school.

As someone who gets up for work and has to be out the door by 8:30AM, it would be impossible for me to make sure my kids made it to school on time. I think some kids who are older can manage but this wouldn't work for younger kids.

High school could start later, sure and I think in some cases it does for some students but a lot of kids even when they are 13 to 16 years old are not reliable enough to get up and get to school on time on their own.
