Why technology is important in education – Are we teaching the right things?

I remember being in school and going to computer class. We learned to type and do basic things on a computer. I never did manage to type without looking, not until I learned it on my own in my 20’s as a result of talking more with people online. I think technology, especially computers, should be taught as a class to all kids but there should be a heavy focus on cyber security and social platforms. Learning about protecting yourself online should be important.

General online safety needs to be taught in EVERY school. Period. There are a lot of cases of children being abused online by adults and it just sickens me. While parents should be teaching their children these things anyways, not many have the time to focus enough on the topic. I think it is just as important as Sex Ed.

I think learning about cyber security is important as well. If you look at how teens and young adults carelessly use their phones today and how many older adults fall for scams on their computers, it is clearly an issue that isn't being addressed at all.

The average computer classes in America teach basic typing skills and that is about it. It seems so dated it is silly. They should be learning way more than that, especially when it comes to internet safety.

Computer learning is behind in the US. I went with a friend to her son's school earlier this year and what they were learning was just basic typing and nothing more. That isn't enough.

Social media is a horrible thing. I see how kids act on these platforms and it disgusts me. I think there should be some kind of lesson for these platforms where kids learn how to protect themselves as well as how to use them in a way that won't effect their future. Talking like a moron on Twitter when you are 16 could cost you a job when you are 20.
