Why were charter schools created?

I am curious as to the history behind them and why they were created in the first place. I understand the differences and reason why we have public and private schooling but I don't know what charter schools serve or why they were even created.

Well, Charter Schools were created as a means to help improve the US's public school system by offering parents a secondary option that can be better in tune with their child's needs. They focus more on the individual needs of each student vs the general needs of the entire class. It is basically more one on one focused education.

Charter schools tend to offer more options over public schools for specialized learning. They are also not cheap either but if you child needs specialized learning for something like OCD, a charter school is likely to have options.

Charter, private and public schools offer three different measures of education. In Charter schools, parents have more say what happens where as in public schools, the state funds these systems and controls them and what our children learn.

Options I suppose. I think it is great that there are different places people can choose to put their kids in in terms of education. I just wish they are all more straightforward and updated to the current times.

Charter schools allow the school system to have more control and freedom without the state being so involved. It gives parents options to specialized classes that their children likely wouldn't find at a public or private school as well.
